Sixteen

Of all the things to go wrong today, it had to be this. Madi was in trouble, and she had no idea how to fix it.

Today was the biggest wedding of the year—of the century—and all of her assistants had bailed on her. She tried calling Emily again, but the girl had stopped answering her phone after their last conversation, in which she told Madi that in no uncertain terms could she come to work today because she had the stomach flu and had spent the morning curled up on the bathroom floor.

And of course Pedro had flown to Texas for his uncle’s funeral yesterday and wasn’t willing to hop on a plane to come back, and Gina couldn’t leave her newborn with a babysitter while her husband was at work.

Which left Madi completely on her own, and that was going to be a disaster. There was no way she could keep things organized by herself, and her parents were on their yearly anniversary trip in Hawaii, and Kit…

Madi stabbed at her phone with her finger to call Kit. Surely he would help her.

“Hey, Mads.”

“Oliver?” Why had Oliver answered Kit’s phone? Madi glanced at her screen, realizing she had called Oliver, not her brother, but she was too panicked to try to explain why he wasn’t the person she needed right now. He had helped at the studio, so maybe… “Are you busy for the next six hours?”

He laughed a little. “Uh, I feel like this is a trick question.”

Madi explained the situation as quickly as she could, then held her breath, waiting for him to tell her he was busy and couldn’t help her. If this wedding went poorly, everyone in the city would know about it. Dr. and Mrs. Jennings weren’t exactly celebrities, but they were rich and powerful enough that they controlled a good deal of the social scene. This wedding would make or break Madi’s career.

She heard Oliver take a breath, and she worried her heart would stop beating in anticipation.

“What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn’t help you, Mads?”

Madi barely dared to hope that meant what she thought it meant. “Really?”

“Tell me where to be and when.”

Madi almost broke down into tears, and she would never think a bad thought about Oliver Hamilton again. Not that she usually did. He was as close to perfect as they came. “Can I come pick you up in half an hour? Dress nice. Do you have—never mind. It’s stupid.” She plugged in her curling iron, though she worried she would be too on edge to do her hair properly.

“Do I have what?” Oliver asked.

“A tux. See, I told you it was stupid. Just wear a nice—”

“I do have a tux, actually.”

Madi paused in the middle of grabbing all her makeup from the drawer. “Wait, you do?”

He laughed, and the sound sent a shiver through her for some reason. “I do. Assuming it still fits, of course. It’s been a few years.”

Why would Oliver have a tux? Madi didn’t even care.
